Drum Lessons Reviews

Hey, my name is Chris, and I've been playing drums and percussion since I was in 6th grade. I took private lessons for about 10 years. I have taken lessons for all kinds of percussion performance; snare drum, drum set, timpani, marimba, and even some lessons in Latin percussion. I went on to study percussion in college and graduated in June 2008 with a BA in Music.  As much as I would love to continue taking lessons from a private instructor, $30 a week for an hour lesson isn't really within my budget.  That would be $1,560 every year, for only 1 hour of instruction a week!

So, I started looking into online drum lessons.  I found some drum sites & courses,  tried them out, and enjoyed some of them.  Unfortunately, some of them are pretty crappy. So, if you're searching around to find a reliable, inexpensive way to learn to play drums, this site will make it easier for you to avoid the bad sites and find lessons that will actually help you.

Disclosure: Since I spend a LOT of time reviewing drum lessons, I would appreciate your support in buying lessons through a link on my site. You won't pay a cent more, but I'll receive a commission for my time writing these in-depth drum lesson reviews, which helps fund this 100% ad-free website (and my drum collection). Thanks!

Quick Summary of Drum Lessons Site Reviews:

Out of all the drum lesson programs available online, these are the only ones I can recommend:

1. Drumming System: My #1 pick for anybody who is looking for drum lessons.  This program has the most content of any program I have come across online.  It includes 20 DVDs, 15 play-along CDs, and 5 workbooks.

2. Learn & Master Drums: This is one of the best values on the market for drum lessons.  For only $149, you get 12 DVDs, 5 play-along CDs, and a workbook.

3. Rock Drumming System: This system is broken down step-by-step to take you from beginner to advanced. It has a separate DVD and workbook for each level. Not as complete as the Drumming System or Learn & Master Drums.

4. Drum Play Along System: This system improves your skills by teaching you to play along with DVDs and CDs. I would not recommend this system unless you are just looking for a quick start in playing drums.

My #1 pick for drum lessons

The Drumming System includes a ridiculous amount of material! It comes with 20 instructional DVDs, 15 play-along CDs, and 5 spiral bound workbooks. After trying and reviewing a bunch of different programs, this is my favorite drum lesson system.

What I like:

  • The DVDs include over 30 hours of instruction.
  • Tons of genres, techniques, and songs covered.
  • Over one hundred songs to jam along with.
  • The lessons are clearly laid out and easy to follow.
  • The combination of DVDs, CDs, and books makes it easier for all types of learners.

What I don't like:

  • At $247, it is one of the more expensive systems out there.  However, with 30+ hours of lessons, it's well worth the cost.
  • The large amount of content can be overwhelming, but it is very well organized.

Overall, despite the high cost, The Drumming System is definitely my favorite drum lesson system out there.

Forget playing for private drum lessons...

Learn & Master Drums is another great lesson system. While it doesn't have quite as much material as The Drumming System, it is a great value for the price.

What I like:

  • The price! Private lessons can cost you well over $1,000 a year, but Learn & Master Drums costs only $149.
  • Lots of great content: 12 DVDs, 5 play-along CDs, and a 100+ page workbook.
  • 24/7 Access to a Student Support site.
  • Easy to follow lessons.
  • Professional instruction.

What I don't like:

  • Some of the beginning lessons move a little slowly; good thing we have fast-forward!
  • Not as complete as Drumming System, but Learn & Master Drums is definitely a great value for the price.

Overall, this is another very good system for learning to play the drums. I highly recommend it!

Another solid DVD system

The Rock Drumming System provides a step-by-step lesson system to take you from beginner to advanced more quickly than you thought possible.

What I like:

  • The system is broken down into beginner, intermediate, and advanced systems with a DVD and workbook for each level.
  • Songs to jam along with; you get to watch the song being played on the DVD, then play along with the CD.
  • Wide variety of lessons and techniques covered.
  • Professional instruction.

What I don't like:

  • Jared is the only instructor so you only get to learn from him, kind of like private lessons.
  • Not as much content as Learn & Master Drums or the Drumming System.
  • The beginner level moves a little slowly, but then you advance to the intermediate and advanced levels.

Overall, I would say this is a good system for drum lessons. It doesn't have nearly as much content as my top 2 picks, but is still a good value.

An interesting concept, but is it worth it?

Drum Play Along System improves your drumming skills by teaching you to play along with DVDs and CDs.

What I like:

  • The system is broken down by genres.  Each genre includes a DVD and a CD.
  • Provides a quick way to learn to play along with music.  Good for drummers looking to gig or hook up with a band.
  • It costs only $97, or about the cost of six 30-minute lessons.
  • 50 songs to jam along with.

What I don't like:

  • Learning to play to songs is great, but you miss out on some important technique lessons.
  • The styles covered are limited.
  • The "lessons" aren't very in-depth.

Overall, this is the cheapest option of the 4, but also the one I recommend the least. If you're looking for a quick start, check it out. If you're looking for a more complete system, try the Drumming System or Learn and Master Drums.

Disclosure: Hopefully these reviews helped you choose the best drum lessons for you. I evaluated each course individually, and since it takes a long time to write such in-depth reviews, I sometimes earn commissions when visitors choose to invest in a course. This doesn't change my reviews at all, but it does help support this website and my drum collection. Thanks for your support!
